For 2008, Citizen is releasing a handful of interesting offerings at Basel World. None the least of which are two Eco-Drive based Citizen Campanola watches. The Eco-Drive based Campanola watches represent a small segment of the entire Campanola line, and of course different movements. The challenge has been in allowing for the watch dial surface to be penetrated by light, yet still maintain an attractive look, befitting the Campanola moniker. Eco-Drive movements are light powered (almost all light, not just sun-light) and must have special dials as the photoreceptors lay beneath this surface. Most Campanola watches have beautifully ornate dials which are hand painted. The amount of pigment and lacquer on the dials makes it impossible to implement an Citizen Eco-Drive movement, but as you can see, this is not the case for all Citizen Campanola watches.

The Franck Muller Group -owned Backes and Strauss watch division has a mission that seems pretty simple. In my own words; make really nice, well designed watches, that are prohibitively expensive, with lots of diamonds. Despite this lofty ambition and young nature as a watch maker, they are succeeding. My favorite among their growing line, is the Men's Berkeley watch. And what a watch it is. The colors and materials differ, as well as the surface area covered in diamonds.Read more ›
The Valjoux 7751 is based on the very popular Valjoux 7750 chronograph. The 7751 adds several complications including: moonphase, synchronized 24 hour time indicator, full calendar with the month, day of the week, and date around the periphery of the face. The 7751 is of course an automatic, and the Temption offers a lovely see-through case back. My version has a gold, or gold-plated version of the movement, but I have seen movements which are just steel. Overall, the movement is not the subject of this review but I have been happy with it. Often times, the complications of a movement require some quirky operations. For example, the system for correcting the date could be more intuitive, but this is an issue with the movement, not the watch.
Clinton: Well the President has the Governor beat here. The platinum version of the Clinton watch is over 7,000. A stately time piece indeed. This is no high-end Bentley money, but you'll be hard pressed to find someone with a more exalted watch hanging around. Like the President of the United States, there are some more powerful people in the world, but they are few and far between, and good luck trying to get retail price for them. For your entrance into presidential timepieces, Audemars Piguet gives you a enclosure for your Clinton watch that is a detailed replica of the White House itself. This white model sitting on a wooden platform opens up like a coffin providing an eternal resting place for your lifesavings.

While the Nivrel watch alone is enough, this particular piece was disassembled by Benzinger and highly decorated as can be seen in the pictures, then put back together. Look at the mechanical movement and view the soft swirls and lines which adorn each section of exposed surface area. These decorations are hand applied with tools or special machines no longer built with any consistency. Watches like this used to be common place for the very wealthy, but due to the time it takes to make them, such practices have all but ceased today. You will be hard at working looking for a similarly decorated German or Swiss watch.
The Nike Amp+ isn't designed to be an all-around running or fitness watch. It's specifically designed for runners who already have the Nike + iPod kit. Similar to the Timex iControl we recently reviewed, the Nike Amp+ is a remote control for your iPod Nano, however unlike the Timex, the Nike Amp+ uses the existing Nike + iPod gadget that plugs into your iPod, so you're actually adding the iPod remote control to the Nike iPod system. Allow me to explain...Read more ›
Removing the "X-Treme" moniker, and you have a beautiful watch. Attractive symmetry with classic elements, and orbiting numbers, you have a great looking watch. Modernly useful, with contrasting colors that really bring the colors out. Four screws on the dial add to a more mechanical feel, and the quasi-tire tread rubber strap is a nice touch. The watch also features a inner rotating bezel with a crown lock to protect against inadvertent adjustment. However even with all that, this Vulcain is just a fancy dive watch, not an extreme performance tool.
It was not until I was able to remove the plastic wrap that I began to see what this watch could do. The entire case pulls open to reveal a view of the movement. A complex flying tourbillon with a 21 power reserve due to the five barrels. The tourbillon movement is placed in a vertical position near a small porthole on the side of the case, for constant viewing. Aside from viewing the columns of gears inside the case, you have a view of a dedicated power reserve indicator, which is a necessary element when you only need to wind the watch once or twice a month.
Look closely at the texture on the exposed areas of the dial and you will see a ridge pattern. This looks attractive, but also tricks the eyes into thinking the surface is a bit more opaque than it actually is. I am actually amazed at how little space on the dial needs to be reserved for this purpose though. I don't think that the subdials share this light permeable quality. Kudos to the Citzen Eco-Drive movement for being so adaptable. Given the movement, the Citizen Campanola Eco-Drive watches feature an energy reserve so that you know when they need to be taken out of the case and worn a bit. Further complications are impressive, with a 12 hour chronograph, peripheral date indicator, and smiling moonphase indicator.Read more ›
It is exciting to see such widespread interest in high-end quartz watches, especially the Citizen Campanola. The signal is clear to watch makers; Americans are declaring that they want high quality watches without the obscene price tags usually associated with them. Watch makers be on notice, your American market exists and is waiting.
A CRM essentially is an application (mostly web-delivered although GoldMine is still software based), that allows you to do so many thing, no simple description will suffice. They allow you to interact with customers in many ways. First by having customer profiles, and then indexing them, sending you alerts, automated e-mails, and so much more. They also track business profits, schedules, and deadlines. Think of a CRM as a glorified cyber-secretary. In stead of training a secretary, you need to customize or otherwise properly configure the CRM to your needs. The biggest hurdle is always going to be initial configuration in terms of complexity for you, and time spent.Read more ›
Lots of other nice features grace this watch. It is easy to see why they have become popular with unique looks and lots of tasteful details. This particular watch originally went for almost ,000, and is now available for about 0. A really good deal consider the watch is still new. I predict that in the next 3 years, ETA movements will be highly sought after because they will cease to be sold outside the company. However, I don't agree with going out and buying any extra watches due to that. ETA movements are plentiful, and one will still be able to purchase ETA movements from its own brands. Further, it is unlikely that ETA will remain off the market for a long time. Once they have been able to increase their manufacturing output, it is more than likely that they will return to their legacy operations.
For what it is worth, the few Hysek Colosso watches are destined to be in the hands of just a few appreciating souls. It is nice to know of it though, and understand the thought and design principles that went in to it. There are going to be a lot of mixed reviews in terms of the style, and don't expect to see large Earth displays on more watches anytime soon. Having said that, the Colosso is a seriously unpretentious watch if you look at it closely. While priced too high (0,000), it does not scream glitz and has subtle curiosity about it. While it does not demand respect like so many other watchs in this class, it does demand the observant eye who instantly becomes inquisitive as to what this watch does, and wishes to see it in action. This itself is a difficult message to send, and the Colosso radiates it.Read more ›

Going back to this specific Formula Rally Chronograph, you have a lot beyond the looks. Inside is a decorated and adjusted ETA Valjoux 7750 automatic mechanical movement. You can see the machined patterns on the movement through the caseback sapphire crystal window. The strap is perforated calf leather in traditional racing style with matched red stitching. Case size is 43mm, and you also have a metal folding clasp on the leather strap. One of my favorite touches is the complimented red gem setting in the crowns. These are called cabochons.
