My wrist shot for a Tangente (35mm)

To honor the Scheufele family's 50 year legacy at the helm of Chopard, the brand created a limited edition L.U.C chronograph that combines design elements from the early sixties with those of a modern Chopard chronograph. The Chopard L.U.C 1963 Chronograph commemorates the year that Chopard was sold to Karl Scheufele, father of the current co-presidents, Caroline and Karl-Freidrich. With a classic charm, period-inspired movement, and modern proportions, the Chopard L.U.C 1963 Chronograph is a fitting nod to the last 50 years of Chopard.

Piaget Polor watches

Expensive watches tend to be those which have the best materials, most interesting designs, coolest movements, and overall better composition compared to more mass market watches that strive to remain at or below a certain price level. Of course I am going to be most excited by items produced where cost is less of an issue than those which must make sacrifices for the bean counters. For that reason, it can often appear that my personal interests lay exclusively with high-end fare. But that isn't true.

Setting the time is easy. The desired home city needs to be positioned at 6 o’clock, and this can be done by using the pusher at 8 o’clock. Afterwards, the wearer only needs to adjust the local hours and minutes using the crown. The hour and minutes, which are always linked with the day and night indicator and 24 time zones, will now show the correct local time and time of all 24 timezones. And when traveling to a new timezone, the wearer only needs to use the pusher to ensure that the new city that he or she is in is once again positioned at the 6 o’clock position. Everything else will automatically adjust itself and remain synchronized.

However, it is not necessarily the clever movement or the somewhat over-done marketing behind the watch that is really interesting, but what the styling of this 2014-2015 model indicates: the more restrained design – lacking all the carbon-fiber and titanium – shows that after recent years' high-tech craze, the direction apparently is a more elegant aesthetic, one that is arguably more suitable to a mature brand like IWC. Nevertheless, technological advancements (i.e. the complex in-house movement) remain – they are just back "under the hood."

Torgoen T32 Automatic Watch Review

Torgoen T32 Automatic Watch Review

Many of the most popular watch faces on FaceRepo are actually reproductions of existing mechanical watches from both popular, and sometimes niche brands. That latter element is particularly interesting to me, and it is an indication of how deeply mechanical watches have been able to penetrate the "nerd culture" (which I am a proud member of). Therefore, in addition to all the Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe, TAG Heuer, Bell & Ross, Bulova, and other mainstream brands who have dials made in their "honor," you see dials based on brands like Xemex, Bremont, MIH, A. Lange & Sohne, and many more. It is truly inspiring to see that technically proficient mechanical watch lovers have translated their passion into a hobby for creating their favorite dials for use on smartwatches.

So let's get the name part out of the way, since I tend to harp on nomenclature (as you probably already know). While this watch is clearly part of the Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde collection, it is mislabeled, as it does not have a "grand second" hand typical of the rest of the collection, but rather a juxtaposed dial, where the hour and minute hands are where the seconds hand would be. Where the hour and minute hands normally are on Grande Seconde models, the Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Tourbillon Aventurine has an exposed tourbillon - which doubles as a second indicator. I feel like I am repeating myself, since I essentially made the same remarks two years ago.

The 44 x 11 mm case is rendered in titanium and treated to a hand-polished finish. The crystal is sapphire with double anti-reflective treatments, and the case back is solid and affixed to the case with eight screws. The DB28 GS still uses De Bethune's floating lug system, which articulates at the center of the case and allows for a very comfortable fit, despite the larger case size.

Stephen Forsey: My fascination began at a young age, thanks to my fascination for mechanics.

During the launch of the Apple Watch, myself and thousands of other bloggers tried to take in the information, while at the same time covering the news, given our own perspectives on the watch or technology industry. Apple even asked a lot of fashion bloggers to attend the Apple Watch launch, which was a curious thing, until you realized that there were about 34 different versions of the Apple Watch, to begin with, that will be available when the smartwatches begin shipping sometime in early 2015. Most notably, a range of versions in full 18k gold or rose gold cases.

Today, things are a bit different, as the major brands are increasingly focusing on the internet and at the same time, it is difficult for smaller brands to acquire mechanical movements or the parts necessary to produce their watches. Nevertheless, we admire the efforts required for smaller brands such as Jordi Swiss Icon to produce watches and bring them to market. This is a review of the Jordi Chronograph Red Horizon.

As with its predecessors, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Ultra Thin 1948 takes its design cues from a historical model, and features a distinctive script just beneath the Jaeger-LeCoultre signature, proclaiming, “Fabriqué en Suisse” (Made In Switzerland), same as the original. I cannot stress just how beautiful the dial layout is on this timepiece; the textured dial, deco elements, outer track detailing, and blued steel markers are simply superb, and the subsidiary seconds register adds a nice symmetry to the dial, as on the Chocolate.

The MR-G collection is well over a decade old and represents the first time that Casio G-Shock strove to be a high-end product. The idea really began with the desire to produce a metal G-Shock watch - something Casio first said it would never do, and then later something they said that they would only do in black-colored steel (they abandoned that as well, eventually giving in to other finishes). Most recently, Casio has released the steel 2014 MT-G collection, and coming in early 2015 is this new MR-G ref. MRG-G1000 watch.

With its twisting lugs, polished and brushed alternating finishing, and its slim bezel, it is not only beautiful to look at, but also has a more unique design compared to some of the other "off-the-shelf" steel cases we have been seeing on many watches in this price segment. Both at its front and back are sapphire crystals, and while the front element could use just a tiny bit more anti-reflective coating under some circumstances, in others the face of the watch looks so exceptionally clean, it feels as though I could reach through the glass and touch the crisp white dial.

On wrist, I found the Chopard Mille Miglia 2014 Race Editions to be really attractive, easily one of my favorite watches from Chopard. The gold has a sort of stately appeal while the steel feels quite muted and offers enhanced legibility thanks to the darker tone of the handset. "Mille Miglia" branding is thankfully reserved, with just a simple but cool logo in the running seconds register.

The movement in the George Daniels 35th Anniversary Watch more resembles that found in a pocket watch than a wristwatch, with its gilt nickel silver movement and large, strong bridges. The quality of finishing, while unusual in the field of modern wristwatch movements, is exceptional when one considers how even in color and gradient, the gilt is across all the plates, bridges, and surfaces. What stands out from the sea of dark gold colored bridges is the large four-arm balance wheel done in beryllium-copper with a free-sprung balance spring and adjustment screws – a system very similar to what is seen with Patek Philippe's Gyromax balance wheel, featured in, for example, Reference 5270 (hands-on here).

The "Ressence concept," if you want to call it that, is about how the time is displayed. Benoit developed a cool system of non-overlapping discs that all move together. There is a subsidiary dial for the hours, one for the day of the week, one for the seconds, and the main hand is for the minutes. The effect of not having overlapping discs is that the dial looks flat and as though it is one with the crystal. Of course, it doesn't quite have the amazing "flat" look of the Type 3 watch, which is filled with liquid, but it is pretty neat nonetheless.

Furthermore, there is a 24-hour chronograph with 1/20th of a second accuracy, a calendar with day and date indications, an AM/PM indicator subdial, low battery alert, Tough Solar charging system, and of course, the GPS and atomic clock radio signal synchronization. Displaying such an overwhelming amount of information without digital displays is certainly an impressive feat, which in turn requires a lot of text to be added to the dial.

The case is rounded off by a domed sapphire crystal – quite possibly the only component in the Tempest Forged Carbon that I could not get to like. This thick piece of crystal definitely is of high quality, and due to the fact that it is domed on both its inner and outer surfaces, it allows for a distortion-free view of the dial underneath, even when examined from steeper angles. My issue with the crystal is that, while it is almost completely free from any distortion at most viewing angles, the strongly curved, double-domed design makes for an unusually high amount of reflections. The large curvature of the crystal means that under some lighting conditions, you will see a rather clear reflection of the person standing next you – to some extent, it sometimes works like a curved mirror. It is here where we should note that the piece I have been wearing is a pre-production prototype, and chances are that the final pieces will receive better AR coatings.
